Weird Science

According to accuweather.com, it's currently 68 degrees here in Bethesda, MD. WTF? It's December.

I have been having a weird day. Nothing happened at all. Same old stuff. But for some reason, I just feel weird. Well, more weird than usual. I'm having strange thoughts and weird moments. I think it's the weather and there's an apocalypse coming. Or something. I just feel like I'm just sort of observing the day, but not really participating. I'm a quiet observer today.

The week has been fairly normal so far. I actually started swimming again and it's felt really great to be active again. It's been a long 2 weeks of inactivity.

Tonight is the first night of no coaching on Wednesdays. Maybe that's what is making me feel weird. I have plans for me and Keller to go visit friends, so it's not like I don't know what to do with myself.

So, I neglected to mention in my last blog post the haircut we gave Keller Sunday night. I don't usually like to mention things that kind of portray me as an idiot. Well, that's not true. It's more of me being an idiot and my child is involved. See, John and I got the crazy idea that we would give Keller a haircut using the clipper things John uses. I normally cut Keller's hair because he HATES getting his hair cut. This wasn't always the case but it is now, so whatever. John wanted to try these clipper things because he thought it would be easier. So, we go along clipping Keller's hair and all is fine but I was having a hard time getting the back clipped. I don't know if it was the way Keller was sitting or what, but I couldn't get any hair off the back. John suggested I take the safety thing off the clippers and cut it that way. So, I did. And now my poor child has a bald spot on the back of his head!!! I totally scalped him. I repeat, John told me to do it. I defer all balme to him. At least it's on the back of his head and not the front, but it is noticable. And he was so cute sitting there, all unknowing, watching his Word World. While we scalped him.

Don't get me wrong, the rest of the haircut is fine. He looks as adorable as ever. But that poor little bald spot makes me feel bad every time I look at it. My poor child.

So, I guess the weather, my strange paranoid thoughts, and my scalped child are lending to the weirdness of the day. Hopefully it will pass. It's making me sleepy.

Devil's Haircut

So, I got my haircut the other night. I chopped it off. I do this every year. I chop it off, I grow it out, I chop it again.

Why do women do this? Is it because society deems women attractive only if they have long, flowing hair? And then women like me, who don't have think hair, and can't get that ideal, end up chopping it off and hating themselves for it. It's truly a vicious cycle.

A bunch of women in my office have cute little bob cuts. And I love them. Then another one of my coworkers has the long, flowing hair. And then there's me. I'm the mousy one in the corner. I try to have cute hair but it just fails. My office mate isn't here at the moment, so I've been spraying and poofing and teasing for a little while. I think it's all right.

On another note, my wonderful husband bought me a Blackberry phone for my birthday. I am addicted. I LOVE it. Seriously, what did we do before we were so connected to everything? I was in traffic this morning (people, it's just rain!) and emailed my bosses to tell them I was late. I can check all three of my email accounts on the phone. And I can even do stuff with Facebook! I can take pictures and email them right away. On a work related note, when my graphics designer sends me stuff that I need to check right away, I can open the attachments right there on the phone! PDFs, Word, Excel, you name it, I can see it! It's pretty kick-ass.

Ok, I'm hopped up on coffee. I need to stop babbling and go do some work. Happy Thursday!

Welcome to the Jungle

I have come to the conclusion that all you have to do to find interesting things in the world is leave the house.

I'll start with last night. I got my haircut at yet another new studio. And the woman that cut my hair was very nice and I think I'll go back to her. But she was really short and when she was styling the top of my head, she couldn't reach it. Even with the chair all the way down. So, I had to slide down in the chair. I was basically falling off the chair. It was pretty amusing.

Then this morning I was out on my run with Connie. Because we essentially live in the same general neighborhood, we kind of run to each other and then run a route together. Before I met her, I was running along and this bunny was on the sidewalk. It didn't flee as bunnies normally do, but it was hopping along next to me for a little bit. I've never had a bunny as a running partner before.

On a side note, the weather was gorgeous this morning. It's days like this that make running wonderful. I think that, if you're not a runner, go for a little run on a cool morning like this and you'll be converted to a runner in an instant.

Anyway, once Connie and I met, we were running along and two deer came out of no where and were running straight at us. It scared the crap out of me. I jumped into Connie and grabbed her arm and screamed a little. I can't help it if I'm easily scared. My coworker scared me the other day because I was in the zone and she started asking me a question and it totally freaked me out. But that's another story.

The deer incident was about a mile into our run. So, we continued on and turned around after another mile. Then, as we approached the area where we saw the deer, we were at about 3 miles, so this was about 15-20 minutes later from when we saw the deer. Well, there they were again. Running full speed across the street. What the hell? This neighborhood has some crazy ass deer tearing through it.

After Connie and I parted ways, I was on my way back and my bunny friend was still hanging out where I saw him the first time. Do things like this normally happen? Ususally when I see some creature out in the woods or something they scurry off and I never see them again. But two incidents of animals sticking around? That's just strange.

Then, I get to the parking garage I park in near my office and I'm walking to the stairs and this poor very pregnant woman is also walking to the stairs. As I get closer to her, I hear her moaning and I see she's holding her belly. I mean, she looked like she was having 5 babies. I looked at her sympathetically and said something along the lines of 'poor thing' and all she said was "8 more weeks." She already looked like she was going to pop. Poor thing indeed.

So all of this happened to me by 7:30 AM. Pretty crazy, huh?

The Girl Can't Help It

Yesterday I was all crying about how no one is reading this blog because I'm boring. Well, let's just discuss what has gone on in the last 19 or so hours since I wrote that post.

As I'm getting ready to leave work yesterday, another huge ass thunderstorm rolls through downtown Bethesda. Now, I was planning on walking over to the Metro because I had a haircut appointment and didn't want to drive there. My boss offers to drive me to the Metro and that's taken care of. We get to the Metro and I proceed to walk over to the escalators and because everything is wet, I slip and nearly fall and crack my head open. I didn't fall, which would have just been awesome, but I'm sure the jerky arms and legs were a sight.

I get to the haircut appointment at PR@Partners at the Mazza Gallerie about 10 minutes late, which wasn't too bad. I saw Olivia, who did an awesome job. She did exactly what I wanted and I'm happy.

As I'm leaving, it begins to storm again, so my pretty haircut was going to get ruined. The receptionist actually asked me if I wanted a shower cap, which would have been hilarious. I declined and managed to run over to the Metro without getting soaked.

I finally get to my car in Bethesda and then proceed to sit in traffic on 270 for about 45 minutes. Why? Because there was an accident on the OTHER side of 270. You know, in the opposite direction that I was going. You gotta love that.

We had a pretty uneventful evening of boiling water so we don't die from the contamination due to the water main break. And then the routine started all over again this morning. As I'm driving into work, I again sit in traffic due to another accident. At least this one was in the same direction I was traveling. Oh well, late for work again.

I listen to Elliot in the Morning on DC101 on my way to work. I don't know why, but that crazy dude makes me laugh. Anyway, they are talking about a show Elliot had seen about sleep deprivation and if you get less than 7 or 8 hours of sleep a night, you are basically ruining your health. I hear that. There has been tons of research on how important sleep is. But that still doesn't mean I get enough. Elliot goes on to say how too little sleep affects your memory, reaction time, libido, etc. Nothing too earth shattering. They also posed the question that, if you could take a pill that mimicked the effects of 8 hours of sleep, but didn't actually have to get into the bed and sleep, would you take it? Um, let me think...YES.

I get into work and get things rolling on my day. I close my office door and start to put on my makeup. Before you judge me, I close the door and put it on as inconspicuously as possible. Hey, it helps me get to work on time and it's better than those other women that put it on while they're driving. Anyhoo, I'm putting on my beautiful, delicious Bare Minerals eye shadow when the unspeakable happens. Now, this eye shadow is a fine, glorious powder that comes in this little tub. Well, I dropped the tub of my favorite shadow, Bubbly, all over the floor and my cute blue pants. I guess me not getting enough sleep slowed my reaction time. It was all in slow motion: me bumping the little tub, it flipping in the air, the powder flowing everywhere, me yelling, "That did not just happen." Thankfully the door was closed, because it was really a mess. It was everywhere. This kind of crap only happens to me. But I got it all cleaned up and nobody knew the difference. Then one of my bosses, who didn't know I was here, opened the door to return something to my desk and I freaked her out. I thought she was going to faint.

It's been an eventful morning! Don't forget to vote in the poll!

Obsession

Oh my God! I have got serious problems.

Anyone that knows me, knows I tend to have a bit of an obsessive personality. All right, maybe it's more than "a bit." When I decide that I love something or am really into it, I have the tendency to go a little nuts. Let's go over some of my most recent obsessions: earrings, lip stick, hair bands, juicing, salad (yes, salad), getting a haircut and what that would entail, anything that has to do with my child, makeup (that was expensive), dresses, and so on. I have had little mini-obsessions recently. Nothing to really tell anyone about. I had a brief obsession with lip balm recently only because I developed an allergic reaction to my current one. But I think that's worked itself out. I was obsessed with podcasts for a little while because I listen to them on the bus. I LOVE Ricky Gervais' podcast. I love him. I was obsessed with these Nike running capris for about a week or so. I bought 1 pair when we were in San Diego in January. I loved them so much, I bought 3 more pairs back in April. Then we were at the outlets last weekend and I was about to buy some more and John looked at me like I was crazy. Like you can talk, buster.

But now I feel like I have these fleeting obsessions throughout the day. So, I'll be sitting at my desk at work and have this insane thought about how I absolutely HAVE to go find a shoe store and buy a new pair of shoes. I mean, right now. And then, strangely, it passes. And I feel a little tired after it. What the hell?

Isn't that what happens to drug addicts? Don't they have an intense urge to get high, then they get high, and then they crash and are tired? Does this mean I'm addicted to being obsessed? Seriously, I'm a little scared about this. I sound like a lunatic.

In case you haven't noticed, the latest obsession is this blog. When something happens to me or crosses my mind, I think about how it would be a great blog topic. I sit and think up blog post titles. I had a brief thought that every single blog post title would be the title of a Beatles' song. Like this one was going to be 'Helter Skelter.' But then I figured people would get sick of that.

That's really all I had to say on the topic. I'm hoping that I don't spiral out of control, running out of my office screaming that I absolutely HAVE to go to the store and buy their entire stock of some random item like paper plates. Hmmm....
